Linux is an operating system (OS) just like Windows, and Mac OS. It's an OS with the capability to manage all the hardware resources associted with your desktop/laptop.
Installation
There are several methods to install Linux. Virtualization which involes an emulation. An external Hard drive install. And lastly Hard Drive Partitioning.
